I’m sorry I didn’t get a murder opinion up on Monday. I had my eyes dilated because of glaucoma testing and I couldn’t see a thing! (It was negative, though…yay!)
Today I want to talk to you about editing. I’ve talked about editing before, I know, but a couple weeks ago I overheard someone talking about their first book. It was their NaNoWriMo project. It was this 14-year-old kid (my boss’s daughter…go figure), and she had her laptop with her. Instead of writing, she was talking to her friend about how she was looking forward to getting accepted into publication the first of December, and she was so good at writing, she didn’t need to edit at all.
Okay, first of all, you should be writing if you want to get 50,000 words. Not talking. Second of all, I’m 20 years old, been writing stories since I was seven, and I still need to edit. You are not special.
Editing is extremely important to making your book be the best it can be. You have got to get some editing work done. I read my own first draft of Days of the Kill… The horror! The third draft is turning out better so far…
You will have to go through several drafts. Don’t send it over to a professional at first, though. Go through it yourself, and then have a few friends (beta readers) go over it and give you suggestions. Then you can finally send it off to a professional. I get excited just thinking about it!
Please don’t send your NaNoWriMo project over to a publisher the first day of December. They’ll laugh at you, I’m sure. You don’t want that embarrassment.
Keep the faith, writers. I believe in you all.
